Got the call from Rob & Alan mid morning that they were up for a session at
St Fergus. Arrived at around low tide (12:00 ish), with the wind cross off
from the right and the waves lining up quite nicely with fairly clean faces
of 3 to 5 feet, with flatter periods between sets. The wind was hovering
around 20 mph, and even the sun was trying to shine. Decided on the 6.3m
and big board, and started to rig. Davey turned up, who apparently sailed
this beach quite a bit, but often on his own, and so was pleased to see us
all venturing further afield than Newburgh where we tend to sail - from my
point of view partly because I live in the village about 300m from the
launching site.
Anyway, was a little underpowered with the 6.3 close to shore, but powered
up beyond the break. The extra float of the big board negated this, and
when tacking / gybing onto the waves. Getting out wasn't too much of a
problem if you timed your run, although got trashed a few times, but no
breakages. Managed quite a number of exhillerating wave rides - hesitate to
say 'down the line', but it felt good to me, and had a number of rides with
at least 3 bottom/top turns, with the board turning much tighter than I was
expecting when on the wave for such a big board.
Really enjoyed the session, as did everybody else, and it was nice to have
a bit of company for both the sailing and the banter both before and after.
Can't wait for the next outing.
